Term 1

      • Instructional texts
      Aims:
      • to introduce an instructional text and to discuss some of the features of this text, especially its structure;
      • to show pupils how to use such a structure to compose their own instructional texts;
      • to introduce pupils to the use of the imperative in instructional writing.

    Skywatching 1
      Range:
      • Recounts, observational records
      Aims:
      • to introduce the concept of an observational record;
      • to explore chronological sequencing in such a record;
      • to explore different ways of representing verb tense and the effects on meaning.

    Skywatching 2
      Range:
      • Recounts, observational records
      Aims:
      • to extend the concept of an observational record;
      • to explore the ways in which chronological sequence is indicated in such a record;
      • to explore different ways of forming questions from declarative sentences.

    United
      Range:
      • Recount of events
      Aims:
      • to introduce the recount text type and to identify key features of this genre, focusing particularly on the use of chronological order and time-based connectives;
      • to extend knowledge of past tense and the various ways in which this can be formed.


 
Term 2
    Countries
      Range:
      • Non-chronological reports
      Aims:
      • to introduce a tabular way of presenting information;
      • to use this data to answer fact or opinion questions;
      • to read and then write about the countries examined using a writing model;
      • to look critically at agreement and consistency in sentence structure.

    Hygiene 1
      Range:
      • Explanations
      Aims:
      • to introduce an explanation text and to discuss some of the features of this text, especially the way that the text answers the question 'why?';
      • to explore the ways in which pronouns refer to nouns.

    Hygiene 2
      Range:
      • Explanatory writing
      Aims:
      • to introduce the writing of an explanation.

    Little Red Riding Hood 1
      Range:
      • Fairy stories
      Aims:
      • to introduce a very old version of a traditional story, read this together and engage the pupils in comparing this version with other versions they may know;
      • to explore the use of commas to mark subordinate clauses within sentences.

    Little Red Riding Hood 2
      Range:
      • Fairy stories
      Aims:
      • to remind the pupils of an old version of a traditional story, and to analyse the structure of this story;
      • to use the structure to firstly plan, and then write, their own versions of this story or a different tale, in the traditional style;
      • to explore how writing can be adapted for different audiences.


 
Term 3
    Prefixes and Suffixes
      Range:
      • Letters, commentaries, leaflets to persuade, criticise, protest, support, object or complain
      Aims:
      • to revise the use of a range of prefixes and suffixes.

    Black Beauty 1
      Range:
      • Stories from a variety of cultures and traditions
      Aims:
      • to introduce a classic story, read this together and engage the children in thinking about narrative point of view;
      • to identify elements in the story which indicate this point of view, to change these elements to change the point of view and to discuss the effects;
      • to explore the ways that connectives in the story indicate sequence.

      • to introduce the writing of a persuasive letter, using a variety of persuasive devices.

      Aims:
      • to introduce a persuasive text and to discuss some of the features of this text, especially its structure;
      • to show pupils how to use such a structure to compose their own persuasive texts;
      • to introduce pupils to ways in which such writing can be adapted for different groups of readers.
