Term 1

    Late Late
      Range:
      • Rhymes with predictable and repetitive patterns
      Aims:
      • to read a rhyme with a predictable pattern, and to use this pattern as a model for the pupils' own writing;
      • to focus on the importance of capital letters and their use in beginning sentences and starting names.

    Hamster
      Range:
      • Rhymes with predictable and repetitive patterns
      Aims:
      • to introduce children to simple captions and labels;
      • to give guided practice at reading words in captions and matching these to pictures of objects;
      • to give some children the experience of writing a set of simple instructions by filling in missing words.

    My School
      Range:
      • Labels and captions
      Aims:
      • to introduce a simple caption-based book and to use it as a basis for some writing of further captions;
      • to introduce children to the use of full stops and capital letters to indicate sentences.

    The Building Site
      Range:
      • Information books, including non-chronological reports
      Aims:
      • to introduce a non-chronological report and the information given about the contents of this by the title and cover illustration;
      • to read this report and use its illustrations as a starting point for the writing of extended captions, each as a complete sentence.

      Aims:
      • to introduce a simple information text and compare this with a fictional story on a similar topic;
      • to explore some of the differences between fiction and non-fiction;
      • to establish the use of capital letters for names and sentence beginnings.

      • Fairy stories
      Aims:
      • to introduce a traditional story and the concept of characters in stories;
      • to explore some of the qualities of characters in a story;
      • to consolidate the use of full stops to demarcate sentences.

    Covers and Contents
      Range:
      • Information texts
      Aims:
      • to consider how different non-fiction books can be used to find answers to questions;
      • to consider how the contents page can be used to find where information is located within a book.

    Book Covers
      Range:
      • Fiction
      Aims:
      • to explore the front cover and blurb of an unfamiliar text to predict its content.
      • to consider the language conventions of the covers of novels.
