In this activity, the class is invited to go up in a balloon with Geo the lynx, and look at what the earth looks like from the air.

Before starting the simulation, discuss what the pupils think Geo might see if he goes up in his balloon. Will he see more of the land? Will things look the same or smaller? Click the 'Play' button and read out Geo's speech, pause when views of the land are shown. Ask pupils what they notice about these views. At the end of the presentation, ask the pupils whether the expected to see what Geo saw.

This introduction to plan views could lead into a discussion about maps and how they are simple pictures of the land, seen from the air.

Further Suggestions for Independent or Group Work
Tell the pupils that Geo is in his balloon and wants to find their school. Ask them to draw an aerial picture of the school to help Geo find them. Aerial pictures in the Easiteach Geography multimedia bank can be displayed on the white board to help pupils.
Using ICT Further in this Topic
The pupils could use the Easiteach Geography map building tool to create a picture map of their local area.
